The emoji movie The emoji movie is a 2017 3D computer animation comedy film about all the emoticons we use almost every day. The film is voiced by some incredible artists including James Corden, Anna Faris, Sofia Vergara and Sir Patrick Stewart.

The movie takes place in Textopolis and revolves around Gene (voiced by T.J Miller) who is a ‘meh’ emoji capable of making multiple emotions, which is why he is labelled as a default and is set up to be deleted. In his journey to escape, he meets Hi-5 and Jailbreak, who help keep Gene from being obliterated.

Visual-effects supervisor Dave Smith lead his team to make believable, relatable characters using tools like WireCore. A new shading system in Arnold was also used – a powerful Monte Carlo ray tracing renderer that was developed with Sony Pictures Image works in order to give the characters some depth.

The emojis are iconic in their 2D space of a text message, but the movie gave them the kind of depth and roundness that turned them into movie iconswith complex designsthat came with tech challenges. There are around 280 characters in Textopolis, and each one of them has a unique look.

Abstract worlds were created for apps like Facebook, Dropbox, Spotify and others that were featured in the movie. Each app was visualized as a separate concept. Spotify was depicted as streams of music!

The music score was upbeat as the movie undergoes a series of adventure phases and its visuals were colourful, bright and captivating. Ensuring the audience’s utmost attention.
Visual references to Casablanca, Life of Pi and other classic films were made during the movie to create an appeal to young and older audiences.
