Smurfs: The Lost Village

Smurfs the lost villageSony Pictures animation production ‘Smurfs: The Lost Village’ is a 3D animated comedy based on ‘The Smurfs’ comic book series by Peyo. This Kelly Asbury film is a reboot of the Smurf movie and stars the voices of Demi Lovato, Julia Roberts and Rainn Wilson.

Smurfette and her friends Clumsy, Hefty and Brainy find a mysterious map that has some secret of the Smurf world. The three friends follow the map that leads them to a forbidden forest. To find out the secret, the three friends get involved in a funny and adventurous journey.
The animation was created by the team of Sony Pictures ImageWorks. The team used Autodesk Maya as the main software and 3Ds Max for character modeling. The environment in the movie was given special attention and used a shallow depth of field in order to ensure that the audience felt as though they were with the Smurfs.

Creating the levitating river was one of the biggest challenges the animators faced. They began with a creative concept. Given that there are multiple streams intertwining, each stream was treated as a tube. Each tube was rigged and passed on to the animation team for further manipulation. Since the river levitates, the NASA footage of astronauts playing with water in space was used as a reference. To complete the whole look, the team added a bioluminescence pass to imitate the look of algae blooming when the river interacts with objects.
The animation team made use of a buffer body to represent the shape of Smurfette’s hair and had controls to move it when she turned left and right. The animation team had to create grooms for two hairstyles and had to enable blending between them.
The background score, music and all the sfx are created by Christopher Lennertz along with 27 musicians. The sound mixing was done in Dolby Digital.
