The Golden Compass

The golden CompassDirected by Chris Weitz and distributed by Warner Brothers, The Golden Compass is a fantasy and adventure film based on ‘Northern Lights’ i.e., the first novel in Philip Pullman’s trilogy ‘His Dark Materials’.

The movie stars Nicole Kidman, Dakota Blue Richards, Daniel Craig, Sam Elliott, Eva Green, and Ian McKellen, and is based on adventures of an orphan named Lyra Belacqua(Dakota) who lives in a parallel universe that looks just like ours.

Lyra’s world turns upside down when her friend Rodger is kidnapped by a shadowy group of chid thieves. She decides to help him and this is where the adventure of the movie begins.

Almost all scenes in the movie were Computer Generated, right from the Victorian cities to the snow-covered Arctic region. The movie also includedvisual effects and CG animation in the great battle at the end with witches, ice bears, wolves and gypsies.

The death of demons depicted during the battle through the fiery disintegration of dust particles uses same fluid simulation technique. Key-frame animation was used for the larger battle scenes that required a massive use of crowd simulation.
