Monster Island

Monster Island

Monster IslandReleased in July this year, Director Leopoldo Aguilar’s Monster Island is a Mexican computer animated fantasy film. Also known as L’IlladelsMonstres, the film stars Fiona Hardingham, Roger Jackson, Jenifer Beth Kaplan and Eric Larsen amongst others.

The movie revolves around Lucas, a 13-year-old lonely boy who discovers that his inhaler is in fact, a medicine that protects his from a monstrous metamorphosis. Lucan embarks on a journey to Monster Island, to learn about his identity.

The Mexican animation may be charming to children. The character designs are generic and resembles the animation styles of Frankenweenie and Coraline.

The storyline is simply cheerful, appeals to children and full of metaphors. The message it seems to radiate is about the perils of growing up differently, and learning to accept yourself for who you are. As the story builds, the characters develop leaving the viewers wanting more.

Lucas struggles with his dual identity, however, the movie fails to establish either one of his identities to its full potential, sort of meeting it halfway. The younger audience is probably the only group that may find the movie amusing. Since the movie was a low budget animation, it does not create a tangible monster world, like in Monsters Inc., action scenes are rendered poorly and the foreign accents for some of the characters are plain awful.
