Green Lantern
This 2011 American superhero film is based on the character Green Lantern from DC Comics. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Mark Strong, Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Robbins and Angela Bassett.
The film revolves around Hal Jordan, a test pilot who is selected to be the first human member of the Green Lantern Corps. He is chosen by Abin Sur, a dying alien who gives him a ring with superpowers and a lantern battery. Despite the scepticism that arises from his friends and the girl he loves, he takes on the task, using the ring given to him to harness willpower and fight against evil.
Hal Jordan must face his fears and confront the telekinetic scientist who has been corrupted by Parallax, a fear based abomination from the Green Lantern’s past.
Sony Pictures Image works brought a lot of visual effects onto the screen for this movie. They delivered close to 1000 shots. The Green Lantern Corps wear green luminescent suits, which were all Computer Generated.
Rough performance capture shots were required to be shot, since Hal Jordan’s mask was entirely Computer Generated as well. The film used bluescreens for a lot of the action scenes while Hal Jordan was flying, thus requiring CG backgrounds.
Hal Jordan’s final suit look consisted of an outer layer, basically skin sliding over the top of a muscle layer. Within that, the Animation and VFX team aimed to show muscle volumes and shapes moving in order to demonstrate the Green Lantern energy that emanated from his suit.
Many of the other featured characters were mainly key-frame animation and only a small amount of motion capture.
Parallax is an organic mass of stolen souls which grows larger as it takes over planets and seeks Earth. The Parallax shots amounted to around 200 in total and included both the creature itself, city re-creations and large environment extensions.
